Culture of Death – This Week’s News

The Culture of Death is an apt characterization of our world and as Christians, we are called to resist and speak out against every attempt to undermine the sanctity of life.

That is why every week I share articles, essays, and posts from around the internet of interest to those who care about the value of human life from conception to natural death.

This weekly post will inform the reader on a variety of bioethics issues, including abortion, assisted suicide & euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, genetic engineering, and more facets of the culture of death.

Vermont Legalizes Assisted Suicide by Zoom

Remember when we were told that assisted suicide would only be engaged in as part of an intimate and long-term physician/patient relationship?

Of course, the laws never required that. And now, Vermont has legalized assisted suicide by Zoom or Skype. The new law also eliminates the previous requirement that the doctor have examined the patient. In other words, the poison-prescribing doctor would seem to never have to actually meet the patient in person.

The Push to Normalize Infanticide

The push to legalize infanticide should not come as a shock. After all, infanticide is not that far removed from abortion—and is literally inches removed from partial-birth abortion. Federal laws protect unborn children from partial-birth abortions. However, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, whose stated mission is to “enhance the health and well-being of all Americans,” is led by former Attorney General of California Xavier Becerra, who has repeatedly refused to acknowledge that partial-birth abortion is illegal.

Biden Administration’s Plan to Destroy Medical Conscience Is Un-American

Freedom of religion is fundamental to the American concept of ordered liberty. But President Joe Biden doesn’t seem to care. If news reports are right, his administration intends to force doctors and nurses to participate in abortions—even when it violates their religious beliefs. It plans to force Catholic hospitals to violate Church teachings by requiring them to provide sterilization and gender transition procedures, even on children.

In short, the Biden administration will coerce health care workers and institutions to adopt the values of secular woke culture in their professional lives.

Biden Is Purging from Health Care Anyone Who Thinks Babies Are People

If the Biden Administration forces medical personnel to participate in the culture of death, the health care system will be adversely affected.

Imagine an America in which a summa cum laude medical graduate interviews at countless medical schools but cannot find one that will tolerate her Christian faith, a faith-based pro-life clinic faces a financial crisis after having its federal Title X funds stripped away, and federal agencies discriminate against hospitals and clinics nationwide for refusing to kowtow to the administration’s extremist stances on abortion, sexuality, and marriage.

That reality is already well on its way here, and will only get worse with the proposed elimination of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) conscience protections for health professionals. President Joe Biden’s HHS announced last week that the agency is in the “rulemaking process” of rolling back former President Donald Trump’s protections for medical personnel whose faith prevents them from performing procedures like abortion.

Christian Group Files Lawsuit to Stop Biden Mandate Forcing Doctors to Do Abortions and Sex Changes

Please pray this lawsuit is successful.

But today, Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys are representing the Christian Employers Alliance in a lawsuit challenging two Biden administration mandates. They have a hearing in federal district court Monday. They say the mandate forces religious nonprofit and for-profit employers to pay for and perform surgeries, procedures, counseling, and treatments that seek to alter one’s biological sex and to do abortions — actions that violate their religious beliefs.

Corporations Claim Protecting the Unborn Is “bad for Business”

While social liberals have failed to implement their agenda through the democratic process, they increasingly use big business to get it done. Yelp is the latest activist corporation taking sides in the abortion debate, quick on the heels of Citigroup. Yelp now offers an expanded “reproductive healthcare” policy similar to the one offered by Citigroup to its employees. The policy provides travel and lodging benefits for employees seeking abortions across state lines. Both policies were created to circumvent the Texas heartbeat law, which protects unborn babies in the Lone Star State from abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected. (Iowa passed a similar law in March.) But the worst thing about the Yelp and Citigroup initiatives is that they are using your money to do it.

Yelp now adds its name to a list of more than 50 companies publicly lobbying against the Texas law, with Citigroup, Lyft, Ben & Jerry’s, and Reddit counted among them. In 2019, more than 200 corporations, including tech giants such as Zoom, Square, and GoFundMe, signed a similar statement advocating for “reproductive healthcare,” asserting that restrictions on abortion (aka protections for the unborn) are bad for the economy and “bad for business.”

American Academy of Pediatrics Tells Doctors to Congratulate Parents of Babies With Down Syndrome, Don’t Apologize

Here is some positive news to close out this week’s culture of death roundup.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is encouraging doctors to take a positive, more life-affirming approach to families whose unborn babies have been diagnosed with Down syndrome.

In newly published guidelines, the medical group instructs doctors who are giving news about a Down syndrome diagnosis to encourage and direct families to resources, not present an all doom-and-gloom prospect for the child’s life, Live Action News reports.

Stay strong in your opposition to the culture of death. Support life from conception to natural death.

11 Rescue those being led away to death hold back those staggering toward slaughter. 12 If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay everyone according to what they have done? (Proverbs 24:11–12 ESV)
