Pro-choice Lies: A Response

Over the past 50 years, the pro-abortion crowd has built its case on false arguments, falsified facts, and out-and-out lies. In fact, pro-choice lies created the tale told by Norma McCorvey (i.e., the Roe of Roe v. Wade).

Pro-choice Lies

In 1987, McCorvey admitted “she had fabricated her account of being raped by three men and a woman in 1969 because she had hoped to circumvent a 100-year-old Texas law that banned abortions except when the woman’s life was in danger,” as The New York Times reported.

That pro-choice lie ultimately led to the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court Decision, resulting in the deaths of over 63 million unborn children.

Pro-choice Lies to the Rescue

Now, with the overruling of Roe imminent, old pro-choice lies are being joined with some new falsehoods and red herrings. The leftist abortion mob is in a panic and they are responding with false claims designed to put pro-lifers on the defensive.

Ben Shapiro, writing on Life News.com sums up what’s happening.

In the aftermath of a leaked Supreme Court draft majority decision prospectively overruling Roe v. Wade, the Left in the United States has gone into full-fledged panic mode. That outsized panic has manifested as a variety of unconvincing or blatantly immoral arguments: the argument that abortion is a necessary adjunct to women’s freedom — as though contraception doesn’t exist, and as though women are never responsible for their own sexual decisions and the consequences thereof; the argument that unless society provides for any number of government programs, abortion should not be prohibited — as though the solution to lack of universal child care is the death of the child; the argument that conservatives will next attempt to outlaw interracial marriage — an absurd slander on its face.

This post won’t respond to every pro-choice argument but will focus on the lies being thrown around on the internet, social media, and mainstream press.

(Spoiler Alert: Notice that none of these pro-choice lies mention the fate of the unborn baby.)

Joe Biden, Purveyor of Pro-choice Lies

“Good” Catholic Joe Biden once again put on his Chief Abortion Cheerleader hat in response to leaked Supreme Court draft opinion.

Biden told reporters he doesn’t want Americans to have the right to vote on whether babies should be killed in abortions, saying “I’m not prepared to leave” abortion “to the whims of the public at the moment.”

Biden also tried to make it look like Christianity doesn’t really condemn abortion.

“Roe says what all basic, mainstream religions have historically concluded, that the existence of a human life and being is a question: Is it at the moment of conception? Is it six months? Is it six weeks? The idea…we’re going to make a judgment…goes way overboard.”

First, Joe would rather have 9 unelected justices decide the question of abortion and deny the American people the right to decide. Many problems with this but it is not the focus of this post.

Second, thank you Joe for exposing the first pro-abortion lie we will address. Christianity doesn’t condemn abortion.

What Does the Roman Catholic Church Teach About Abortion?

Joe is a “good Catholic” so let’s first see what the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church says about abortion.

2270 Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person – among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.

2271 Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law…Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes.

2272 Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. “A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae,”[76] “by the very commission of the offense,”[77] and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law.[78]

The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society.  (For context and footnotes, see the Catechism online.)

I am not a Roman Catholic, but I agree with this statement and believe it reflects the biblical teaching on the sanctity of human life.

So, Can Christians Be Pro-Choice?

This is not the place to argue this in depth, but here are a few thoughts.

  • Several denominations claim to be Christian and are pro-choice. These include the Evangelical Lutheran Church, United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church U.S.A., and the United Church of Christ.
  • So-called pro-choice Christians present many arguments, including some requiring significant Scripture twisting, to support their claims. None of their arguments work.
  • I believe it is wrong for a Christian to be pro-choice.
  • I also believe that many pro-abortion Christians are true believers who have bought into pro-choice lies. More guilt lies with church leaders who promote pro-choice lies in their congregations.

I will respond to this question in future posts.

Pro-Choice Lie #2: Abortion is a Constitutional Right

This goes right to the heart of the furor that is fomenting the latest pro-choice lies. I will allow Justice Alito’s words to speak for themselves.

“When one of our constitutional decisions goes astray,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote in his draft opinion, “the country is usually stuck with the bad decision unless we correct our own mistake.” May the court find the courage to finish that job — for the nation’s sake and ours.

“We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” he writes in the document, labeled as the “Opinion of the Court.” “It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”

Roe’s “survey of history ranged from the constitutionally irrelevant to the plainly incorrect,” Alito continues, adding that its reasoning was “exceptionally weak,” and that the original decision has had “damaging consequences.”

“The inescapable conclusion is that a right to abortion is not deeply rooted in the Nation’s history and traditions.”

Pro-Choice Lie #3: Only Illegal Abortions will be available in the United States

This lie fails to point out that overturning Roe doesn’t automatically make abortion illegal in the U.S. Rather, it puts the decision to allow abortion in the hands of each state, and ultimately, the people of the state.

That’s why Joe Biden is against giving the people, you and I, the right to make this decision. (Think about this. Our pro-choice President doesn’t want us to have a choice about allowing or restricting abortion.)

As of this writing, 26 States Will Ban All or Most Abortions if Supreme Court Overturns Roe v. Wade

More states may join this list as Polls consistently show that a majority of Americans want abortions to be banned or strictly limited—something Roe v. Wade does not allow.

Clearly, those wanting an abortion can find a place to have a legal one. Though having to travel to get an abortion may cause one to pause and think, and that is a good thing.

Pro-Choice Lie #4: Abortions Save Women’s Lives

This is the “golden oldie,” of pro-choice lies. “Thousands of women died from illegal abortions each year.”

The truth:

The fabricated statistics came from those who wanted to manipulate the public’s emotions to decriminalize abortion. We know this because former NARAL co-founder Bernard Nathanson admitted that the 5,000-10,000 annual death statistic fed to the public and media in the late 1960s was completely made up.

In addition, even the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) found that the figure “appears unrealistic….”

In reality, it was not legalizing abortion that lowered the death count for women, but the advent of infection control measures, which impacted all maternal deaths.

Even the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute writes that by 1950, “just over 300” women died from illegal abortion, adding that it was most likely “because of the introduction of antibiotics in the 1940s, which permitted more effective treatment of the infections that frequently developed after illegal abortion.”

Pro-Choice Lie #5: Reversing Roe Will Put Women in Jail for Abortions

This is just ridiculous! Here are some facts:

Democrat Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut claimed last Sunday that the leaked Supreme Court decision means “women and doctors are going to be sent to jail immediately when this opinion becomes a reality.”

But Murphy, an attorney, failed to explain that prior to Roe, when abortion was illegal in nearly every state, women weren’t being rounded up in jails for having abortions. Who would even lobby for such laws? Abortionists might get jail time, as “legal” abortionist Kermit Gosnell did in Pennsylvania, but women were not prosecuted or sent to jail even for self-abortion.

As Villanova University law professor Joseph Dellapenna noted, in the 19th and 20th centuries, “Courts rationalized their view of women as victims of abortion … by declaring that a woman ‘was not deemed able to assent to an unlawful act against herself.’ This attitude was reinforced by the reality that generally no conviction of the abortionist could be obtained without the testimony of the woman who underwent the abortion.”

Dellapenna also pointed out that states like New York “enacted immunity statutes … to protect women from prosecution if they would testify against their abortionists.”

Pro-Choice Lie #6: They will Prosecute Women for Self-Abortion if Roe Is Reversed

Obviously, pro-abortion advocates tossing out pro-choice lies like this one haven’t done the usual liberal “fact-checking” dance.

Attorney Paul Linton performed exhaustive case review background work on the actual practice of prosecuting abortionists in the United States. He could not find even “one reported case from any State, prior to Roe, in which a woman was prosecuted, convicted and sentenced for inducing her own abortion, or for consenting to an abortion performed upon her by a third party.”

Pro-Choice Lie #7: Women Who Miscarry Could be Criminally Prosecuted

I frankly must wonder about the IQs of those who make such claims, and those who believe them.

Miscarriage is not intentional, induced abortion. It can happen because of many health reasons.

Both my daughter- and daughter-in-law suffered over one miscarriage before carrying my beautiful grandchildren to term. The miscarriages were emotionally painful. However, I know I have more grandchildren waiting for me in heaven!

This lie especially hurts women who are suffering from these conditions by giving them the false impression that when they seek medical help, they could be refused treatment or even punished for doing so.

Pro-Choice Lie #8: Ectopic Pregnancies Will be Prosecuted When Roe V. Wade is Overturned

Indeed, another pro-choice lie meant for the ignorant.

Treating an ectopic pregnancy is not an abortion.

I have a good friend who had an ectopic pregnancy. Both she and her husband are pro-life. While we mourn the loss of the unborn child, they could not avoid it.

If they didn’t end the ectopic pregnancy, both the mother and child would die. There is no chance of saving the unborn child.

This article provides more information.

Pro-Choice Lie #9: Reversing Roe Will Criminalize Pill and IUD Use

Forbes Magazine last week suggested that reversing Roe will lead to birth control pills being outlawed because “defining the life of an ‘unborn child’ as starting at fertilization or conception … would affect common birth control methods.”

Another unfounded argument.

But users of IUDs or the Pill were never prosecuted under the criminal abortion laws that were in place prior to Roe, so why would they be prosecuted if Roe is reversed? Most of the abortion laws prior to Roe defined the unborn child’s life as beginning at fertilization or conception.

Further, as eminently principled pro-life advocate and late Notre Dame law professor Charles Rice wrote, “Early abortifacients are beyond the effective reach of the law. It will usually be impossible to prove that life was terminated in an early abortion; prosecution for abortion therefore would be practically impossible.”

“Since ‘contraceptive’ drugs are licensed for legitimate uses, it is practically impossible to prevent their use for abortion,” he continued. “The legal obliteration of the distinction between contraception and abortion has put chemical abortion beyond the practical reach of the law.”

Pro-Choice Lie #10: Banning Abortion is Bad for the Economy

Now, this pro-choice lie is off-the-wall.

But what would you expect from a left-leaning, pro-abortion member of the Biden administration?

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen thinks killing unborn children is good for the economy.

Well, it is certainly good for the bottom line of Planned Parenthood. And I guess more women can go to work when they don’t need to stay home and change diapers.

In fact, children are to be treated as potential obstacles: as Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said last week, “access to reproductive health care, including abortion, helped lead to increased labor force participation; it enabled many women to finish school. That increased their earning potential.” This explains why the Left has now embraced the language of “forced birth” to describe laws protecting the unborn: pregnancy is no longer seen as the possible biological outgrowth of sexual activity, but as a dramatic foreign imposition on women. The default, for the Left, is childlessness; pregnancy is somehow unnatural. Thus, the entire Democratic Party apparatus now refuses to countenance even the mildest restrictions on even late-term abortion.

More Pro-Choice Lies

By now, it’s obvious that lies are the only defense pro-abortion advocates have for killing unborn children.

Resist Pro-Choice Lies and Stand Firm Defending the Life of the Unborn

11 Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. 12 If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay everyone according to what they have done? (Proverbs 24:11–12 ESV)

Addendum—Breaking News

Finally, Catholic Bishops take pro-abortion Nancy Pelosi to task, banning her from Communion.

The nation’s Catholic bishops are already speaking out in favor of Catholic Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone’s decision to deny Nancy Pelosi communion over her repeated abortion promotion.

After that decision, Pelosi’s bishop in the diocese where she has her vacation home says he has instructed parish priests to implement the decision and refuse her communion if and when she visits their church.

Now, other bishops are speaking out, saying the decision is correct because it was Pelosi’s decision to extricate herself from communion with the Catholic Church by virtue of her aggressive pro-abortion agenda.

Bishop Donald Hying of Wisconsin (pictured) backs the decision to deny Nancy Pelosi communion, saying “Pelosi has persistently taken public positions in support of legal abortion, contrary to her professed Catholic faith, choosing to separate herself from full communion with the Catholic Church.”

“I support and commend my brother bishop for making this courageous, compassionate, and necessary decision,” Aquila said. “I know Archbishop Cordileone to be a shepherd with the heart and mind of Christ, who truly desires to lead others towards Christ’s love, mercy, and promise of eternal salvation

Of course, Nancy remains unrepentant and rebellious by going to a liberal Catholic church and receiving communion.

Please join me in praying for Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden, that they may come to understand the truth about abortion, reject all pro-choice lies, and repent of their sin.
