How to Get the Word of God into Your Life

As Christians in a hostile culture, we need to be immersed in the Word of God, the Bible.

Today, as I was reading Tim Challies blog. I followed a suggested link to a post on The King and His Kingdom:

Don’t Just Read Your Bible: 12 Ways to Go Deeper

The advice is straightforward, and subtly profound.

This is so helpful. I wanted to share it with you.

When I teach the Foundations class for prospective new members at our church, I devote one session to correctly making the Bible a part of our lives. I use the “Hand Illustration” I learned from the Navigators, where each finger and the thumb represent a way of getting into the Word of God: read, study, hear, memorize, and apply.

In this post, the author includes these, but expands the list to twelve, adding more depth to engaging with the Bible.

Read the post to see what I mean.

I will implement these ideas in my practice and will add them to the class.

Aside: Why is this so important?

You may wonder why I am so fired up about a relatively short post I came across today. As a church leader, trained apologist, and Bible teacher, I am all too familiar with the problems arising from a lack of biblical knowledge and understanding among believers. These include:

  • Easily falling prey to false teaching. (For example, I have a friend whose parents are Christian missionaries. Yet he loves the misleading teachings of Joel Osteen.)
  • Falling away from the faith. If one is not engaged daily with the Word of God, the love of the world (1 John 2:15-17) will lure him away.
  • Justifying following a lifestyle that is condemned by Scripture, yet believing the Bible supports it.
