Today’s Quick Read – Church is Not a Business

May the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you this day.

The Dangers of “Successful” Church

Corey Staton, at For the Church, reminds us:

Treating the church as a business has never been a biblical model. Businesses are all about profits, marketing, advertising, and being innovative. If anything, this is the

total opposite of what the church is meant to be because the business mentality is man-centered and the church is God-centered.

In this brief article, he reminds church leaders that:

  • The Bible never “defines success as a top priority for the church.”
  • An emphasis on the number of conversions can cause a bevy of new church members whose commitment to Christ is transitory. [Fran’s comment: the real danger here is that these people think Jesus saved them, when they are really the seed that fell on the path and was quickly scooped away by the devil (Matthew 13), and not true believers.]
  • Churches that mainly seek growth in numbers are likely to value entertainment over true worship and discipleship.
